PHOTOGRAPHY

I have worked in a variety of fields and professions over the years - teacher, studio engineer, wine merchant, graphic designer, musician, writer - but the truly abiding passionate theme that continues to surface and resurface in my life has been photography, which I have done since I was a tot with my Dad in his darkroom in the suburbs of 1960’s Miami, Florida.

I photograph every day, and and most happily with portrait work, images of people in their environment, soulful lost places and unknown escapades on the planet. Whether working in film or digital, my greatest joy is the discovery of elements in the photograph that reveal and reflect the nature of the subject that came and went in less than 1/250th of a second. I love the feeling that the moment that will reveal the most is about to occur, and the challenge one feels in trying to exercise patience and awareness of that moment when it arrives, and the ability to respond quickly enough to hold onto it with the camera.

I work as an event photographer primarily in the greater Triangle Area (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, NC ) as well as all points North Carolina.  On the evenings of events, I am called upon to take anywhere from 700-2000 images quickly, responsively, and as unobtrusively as possible. I am able to process and edit this work within 72 hours or so, selecting 100-200+ of the best edited images for use in a variety of social media platforms and (at times) in print.

I love to photograph a variety of diverse subjects and events, including but not limited to (this year) Boxer Rescue, Salsa Dances,  Serbian baptisms, trapeze artists, classical music concerts, dancing astronauts, death metal bands, Harley riders, White Truffle Farms and beyond, which gives me a great deal of flexibility for refining my work, and which I cherish as an opportunity to continue and expand the images that I love so much.

On those occasions when I am afforded the opportunity to do some good, documenting an anniversary gala for OCRCC, or a classical benefit concert for Ukraine in Saxapahaw, or a Rolling Stones Tribute Concert for the same, I feel satisfied on all levels, and happier with my work than sometimes I feel the right to! (I grew up in a family where I was told “work's not supposed to be fun - that's why they pay you” - this is information that I see no reason to pass on to my children.) The only thing more fun than benefits? A photo shoot of frisky animals, romping and cavorting, always a hair’s breadth away from mischief.

Photography is a commitment to the preservation of spirits and events, features and beings, as well as giving light of making life better for those in front of the lens and those who love them; the rendering of the true soul of bodies and objects, producing artifacts of time and place for the sake of joy and remembrance: the delicate and precious act of safeguarding the fragile ephemera of future history.

In this, my chosen field of work, I couldn’t ask for anything more.
